Why I love teaching Watercolour for Beginners

I have a new Watercolour for Beginners class starting on Monday 10 November 2025 in Oxford, and am getting excited for it to begin! I love teaching watercolours for a number of reasons. Firstly, watercolour is a very technical medium. This makes it very teachable. There are specific ways that the paint behaves, and specific things that you can do to control the paint. Once you know these things, all it takes is practise.

Secondly, I love working with adults, especially adults who, for one reason or another, don’t think they are creative. They may have been told, a long time ago, that they weren’t good at art. It only takes one thoughtless comment to undermine someone’s creativity. Or, they may have tried to paint with watercolours but found it impossible, and given up.

I love watching these adults slowly find their confidence. Making something you are pleased with gives you SUCH a buzz. Painting is full of surprises. I am constantly surprising myself, even after years of painting. Watching the adults in my class start to feel the joy of creativity is so rewarding.

And the classes are FUN! If it’s my Rooster class, you get the chicken song with your warmups. If it’s my Grumpy Cats ink class, you get my cats playlist. A student recently described my classes as “unhinged” and I thought, “I’ll take that!”

There are still a few spaces in my Watercolour for Beginners class, in Kennington, Oxford, starting on Monday 10 November 2025. So if you are someone who has creativity whispering to you, or who has suffered years of creative neglect…. this is your chance! I’m hoping to keep the group going after Christmas, on Mondays, so it becomes a regular thing. So I’ll have a Friday group (which is full, and going strong, and fabulous) and a Monday group. Let the creativity commence!

If you want a space in the class, don’t delay. Email me on info@catherinejennifer.com
